Beyn's General Introduction

Origins
Founded in 2010, Beyn Theatre Group emerged from a desire to explore new possibilities in theatre making. Beginning with the Medea project, the group sought to place performers and their relationship with the world around them at the center of its practice. Over the years, through continuous experimentation and artistic dialogue, Beyn has developed and revised a set of guiding concepts, an evolving framework of theatre making, and an overarching dramaturgical inquiry that continue to inform one another.
Guiding Concepts: Musicality, Carnivalesque, Otherness
At the heart of the group's practice lie the concepts of Musicality, Carnivalesque, and Otherness. Musicality is approached not merely as a property of music, but as a quality inherent in nature, human behavior, and collective life, revealed through rhythm, dialogue, harmony, and polyphony. The Carnivalesque represents a desire to challenge rigid hierarchies and create spaces in which different voices may coexist and be heard. Otherness reflects an ongoing search for meaning through encounter and dialogue, whether with fellow collaborators, texts, cultures, places, or unfamiliar ways of understanding the world. Together, these concepts guide the group's search for forms of theatricality capable of responding to contemporary life.
A Framework Shaped by Experience
These ideas are pursued through a theatre-making framework that has itself been shaped and refined through experience. Organized around independent projects rather than a permanent ensemble, each project brings together its own constellation of collaborators and unfolds through a main production accompanied by subsidiary performances, expeditions, workshops, and musical and physical studies. Beyn also deliberately avoids maintaining a permanent residency. By inhabiting different spaces throughout Tehran and engaging with diverse architectures, communities, and environments, the group understands movement itself as a means of encountering otherness and expanding its artistic practice.
The Tragedy of Contemporary Human
Running alongside these concepts and methods is an overarching inquiry that has likewise evolved over the years: the tragedy of contemporary human. Rather than a fixed theme, it serves as a common horizon through which each project explores particular manifestations of contemporary life, including violence, discrimination, memory, corruption of power, and collective disappointment.
The Meaning of Beyn
The name Beyn, meaning "between" in Persian, reflects the group's understanding of theatre itself. The scattered points of its logo represent the individuals who gather around each project and the possibilities that emerge through the relationships between them. For Beyn, meaning resides not in isolated elements, but in what comes into being in the spaces between people, ideas, and experiences.
