Prometheous/Plague is one of two productions within Beyn Theater Group's Prometheus project, alongside Rosarium. It is an adaptation of Aeschylus' Bound Prometheus, exploring the human being caught beneath the opposition of old gods and new, drawing on Artaud's vision of theatre as plague and Camus' The State of Siege.
What is left of the human being once the gods have finished with each other?
Prometheous/Plague is one of two productions in Beyn Theatre Group's repertoire that are parts of the broader Prometheus project, alongside Rosarium. It takes Aeschylus' Bound Prometheus as its point of departure — the story of a Titan who defies divine authority, steals fire from the heavens, and gives it to humanity, only to be chained eternally to a rock in the middle of nowhere, his body destroyed and regenerated in an endless cycle of punishment. It is one of the oldest stories of defiance in Western culture. But this performance is less interested in Prometheus than in the figure Aeschylus largely overlooked: the human being, ceaselessly ground down beneath the opposition between old gods and new, between heaven and earth, culture and nature, the permitted and the forbidden.
What does it mean to receive the gift of fire — and be burned by it?
Drawing on Artaud's vision of theatre as plague and Camus' State of Siege, the performance imagines what rises from the ruins of that burning. Not a glorious mythological rebirth, but something rawer and more ambiguous — a manifestation that is as close to devastation as it is to liberation. The Plague here is not only destruction; it is also the name for a kind of terrible illumination, a sun that rises and ruins, and in ruining, perhaps opens a narrow, uncertain passage toward something that might — or might not — be called freedom.
By this stage in the group's journey, the interplay between ancient source material and contemporary urgency had become the engine of Beyn Theatre Group's work — driving the performance through the binaries that structure our world not to resolve them, but to feel what it costs to live inside them.
